Dance Informa chatted with Bailey Munoz, nineteen-year-old winner ofSo You Recollect You lot Can Trip the light fantastic toe (SYTYCD) xvith flavor. Munoz is the first b-boy to win the contest in all of its sixteen years, and the second Filipino-American to win in two consecutive seasons.

What does information technology mean to you to be the first b-boy in xvi years ofSYTYCD to win?

"For yous to say that is just insane, because it really hasn't sunken in. I think coming into the contest as a b-male child, I wasn't on the technical level that everyone else was at, so I knew every performance I did, I had to represent the b-boys. To be the showtime b-male child winner, information technology withal feels like a dream, because I was really inspired by the show, past people like D-trix and Militarist. I felt a huge accolade to represent them in the elevation 10. And it was such a blessing for me to only be in the meridian ten. For me to win the evidence, it still hasn't hit me. Words tin't draw it."

You might be the first b-male child to winSYTYCD, but you're the second Filipino-American dancer to win in two directly seasons, afterward Hannahlei Cabanilla in season fifteen. What does that mean to you?

"I hateful, being Filipino, I take then much family unit. Filipinos, we embrace the civilization. Whenever there'southward a Filipino competing, they're all rooting for him or her. Information technology's then crazy to think that I accept a country behind me. For in that location to be two straight winners, back to back, who are Filipino is just an honor that I know the whole land is celebrating. It'south insane. I get text messages and DMs, and they're all so excited. So after tour, for certain I want to go back to the Philippines and celebrate with them."

In 2010, you made it to the semifinals onAmerica's Got Talent. You were so young then! What'south changed for yous in how you arroyo competing and dance in that time?

"Obviously, I got older. I've been blest to work in this industry at a young age, and I think that has actually got me prepared for the testify. I wasn't trained in all the styles, like contemporary, or ballroom, orBollywood; they gave me Bollywood one time. Because existence on the show, especially being in the top 10, we're nether and then much pressure. We have to learn and perfect these dances in how many days, and perform it on show twenty-four hours similar we know how to exercise these styles. I know beingness in the industry and existence a semi-finalist on some other show has really helped my work ethic, and I know how to handle the pressure a little bit. Every time I walk on phase, I feel like a superhero. I'm not just representing myself, I'1000 representing my family unit, God, other people who take voted for me and all my mentors. It'southward more than than dance with this show, for sure."

While this win is obviously a huge deal, it'south definitely not your only achievement. You lot've toured with Bruno Mars, and performed with Justin Bieber, Beyoncé and Megan Trainor. What's been your favorite performance of your career so far, and why?

"This is probably the highlight of my whole life. And similar I said,Then You lot Retrieve You lot Can Danceinspired me to dance. And then to be on this platform… I tin can't even wrap my head effectually it! To inspirepeople the way I was inspired withal blows my listen. At a immature age, I was like, 'I desire to be on this testify.' So for me to be standing here every bit America'due south favorite dancer, words tin't describe."

You motility solarge! How exercise you lot get such impressive height on your jumps and fluidity in your landings? What'due south your trick!

"I don't have a trick! What's funny is I am smaller, only I just effort to trip the light fantastic toe as big or bigger than someone who's six feet tall and next to me. The Executive Producer calls me Ant Man. He doesn't call me Bailey. Now I know; I never knew why. He told me to look information technology up. When I looked it up, it said an ant tin jump 20 times its average pinnacle, and lift as much every bit, like, a car. And then it's crazy, that's why he calls me Ant Human. Then I don't know what the secret is. Work hard!"

What'south next for y'all? Where can our readers grab you lot?

"I get this question a lot, and I honestly don't know how to reply it. This testify has definitely opened my mind to unlike aspects of dance, and I would love to dabble in, you never know, Broadway! I'll be a b-boy Broadway dancer, or go back to the Philippines, or exercise commercial work. Shoot, I might fifty-fifty do a contemporary b-boy company. Y'all know, the possibilities are countless for all of us. I'one thousand only so excited for the time to come. I'yard just so keen, definitely so corking in this moment, and I know SYTYCD was a journey that I'll never forget. I'm simply so excited for tour; this is a new journey. And to be able to tour with my best friends, and Cyrus and Lauren, it's just such a approving, man. First thing I'thou thinking about is my family. That'south the outset affair I'm going to exercise subsequently tour. Just give back to the people who, you lot know, gave their fourth dimension and effort to me.

I came from a performing arts schoolhouse; they were my foundation. I never trained like the kids who do technique on the evidence, who were studio-based and trained their whole life for this. I was just in loftier school going to ballet class because it was just a curriculum thing. I didn't know that I was going to go along doing that afterwards I graduated high school. But I did information technology on the bear witness; it really benefitted me and so much. The performing arts school I went to is Las Vegas Academy, so shout out to them. They're my foundation."
